Zygomatic Implants
When bone loss in the upper jaw is advanced, there is nothing left for a conventional implant to hold on to. This is where zygomatic implants come in: they are longer than standard implants and pass through the upper jaw to anchor in the cheekbone. Because the cheekbone does not resorb, it provides a solid foundation. Patients who were previously told they had "insufficient bone" can therefore still have fixed teeth.
Where does a zygomatic implant anchor?
Conventional implants are placed in the upper jawbone. Years after tooth loss, or after long-term use of a removable denture, this bone thins. Beyond a certain point there is no longer enough density to carry an implant.
Zygomatic implants solve this differently. The implant passes through the upper jaw at a specific angle and reaches the zygomatic bone — the cheekbone. That bone is dense, strong and unaffected by tooth loss. As a result, bone grafts and additional surgery such as a sinus lift are usually not required.

Who is it an option for?
- People with advanced bone loss in the upper jaw
- Long-term denture wearers who want a fixed solution
- Those who cannot or prefer not to have a bone graft
- Patients whose previous implants failed
- Anyone told their bone was “insufficient”
Why is a general anaesthetic used?
This treatment differs from the other dental procedures on this site. It takes 3–4 hours and reaching the cheekbone calls for precise surgical planning. For that reason a general anaesthetic is used rather than a local one, and you sleep through the operation.
Standard pre-operative tests are carried out beforehand. We recommend bringing a companion with you, and we include them in the accommodation and transfer arrangements.
Will you be left without teeth?
No. In most cases fixed temporary teeth are fitted immediately after surgery or shortly afterwards. Mild to moderate swelling in the first few days is normal and settles quickly. Your permanent bridge is fitted once healing is complete.
How does it work, step by step?
Consultation and CT scan
The dentist makes an initial assessment from the X-rays and photos you send from home. Whether zygomatic implants are right for you is confirmed after a 3D CT scan. Your personalised quote is sent within 24 hours.
Arrival and preparation
You are met at the airport and settled into your hotel. At the clinic the CT scan and pre-anaesthetic tests are completed, and the surgical plan is discussed with you.
Surgery day
The implants are placed under general anaesthetic. The procedure takes 3–4 hours. You are monitored after waking, and in most cases your fixed temporary teeth are fitted the same day or shortly after.
Check-ups and return
Over the remaining days your healing is monitored and any adjustments are made. After advice on care and diet, you are ready for your return flight. The programme totals five nights.
Permanent bridge and follow-up
Once healing is complete, a second visit is planned for the permanent bridge. Throughout this period you stay in contact with your coordinator and we follow your progress with online check-ins.
Who is it suitable for?
- Adults with advanced bone loss in the upper jaw
- Patients found unsuitable for conventional implants
- Those who find a bone graft process too long or unwanted
- Those fit enough to undergo a general anaesthetic
When might it not be suitable?
- Anyone with a health condition that rules out general anaesthesia
- People with an active sinus infection
- Anyone with untreated gum disease
- Heavy smoking — it can affect healing
