What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw placed into the jawbone to take the place of the root of the lost tooth. Because titanium is compatible with bone tissue, it fuses with the bone over time — a process called osseointegration.

An implant has three parts: the titanium screw that sits in the bone, the abutment that connects the screw to the tooth above, and the ceramic crown that forms the visible part. This structure provides a strong, lasting solution without involving the surrounding teeth.

Healing (osseointegration)

After the screw is placed, a healing period of 2–4 months is needed for it to fuse fully with the bone. This varies with the person’s bone structure and the position of the implant. A temporary solution can be provided during healing; the permanent tooth is fitted once fusion is complete.

For this reason implant treatment is usually planned as two visits: the screw is placed at the first visit (around 3 nights in Istanbul), you spend the healing period in your own country, and a short second visit is made for the permanent tooth. We plan your schedule around these two visits.

Treatment process

How does it work, step by step?

Online consultation (from home)

If you have a dental X-ray, you share it with your photos over WhatsApp. The dentist makes an initial assessment and we send how many implants may be needed, the options and a personalised quote within 24 hours.

1st visit — Placing the implants

In Istanbul, after the examination and X-rays, the implant screws are placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Depending on the number of implants, this takes between 15 minutes and 2 hours. Around 3 nights’ accommodation is planned for this visit.

Healing (at home, 2–4 months)

You spend the healing period in your own country. During this time you stay in contact with your coordinator and we carry out online check-ins if needed. If you wish, you can get through this period with a temporary tooth.

2nd visit — Fitting the permanent tooth

Once fusion is complete, a short second visit is made. Impressions are taken and the abutment and permanent crown are prepared and fitted, completing the treatment.

Follow-up

You stay in contact with your coordinator after returning home, and we follow your progress with online check-ins. Implant care and six-monthly check-ups are important for a long lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

How many visits does an implant need?

An implant is usually planned as two visits. At the first visit the screw is placed and you stay around 3 nights in Istanbul. You spend the 2–4 month healing period at home, then make a short second visit for the permanent tooth. We organise both trips for you.

Is the procedure painful?

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Mild swelling and sensitivity for a few days afterwards are normal; your dentist can recommend pain relief if needed and will advise soft foods.

Why does healing take 2–4 months?

It takes time for the titanium screw to fuse fully with the jawbone (osseointegration). This fusion is what allows the implant to stay stable for many years. The duration depends on the person’s bone structure and the position of the implant.

How long does an implant last?

With proper care, implants can last 20 years or more, and the risk of failure is extremely low. Regular brushing, flossing and six-monthly check-ups are important for a long lifespan.

What if I don’t have enough bone?

If the jawbone density is not sufficient, a bone graft may be needed before the implant. This is assessed after X-rays and examination and included in your treatment plan.
